"Rape survivors, predominantly women, are using a Twitter hashtag to publicly share their stories on social media, despite never having reported the crime. Radhika Sanghani reports"
Really interesting article regarding a trending hashtag that sparked the sharing of experiences from rape survivors in the UK. The trend shows a movement away from the cultural perception of rape as a stigmatized issue. It also raises awareness about the reality of rape – its varied forms and effects and the incredibly low number of reports. It provides a space for advocates to share their experiences, while those who want to participate but aren’t ready to share, can listen along.
What’s interesting to me is the vulnerability of the medium. In a culture where rape is such a sensitive and stigmatized issue, these women are baring their souls in 140 characters or less, without the protection of anonymity.
