My name is Jeri-lynn, and I'm a user experience designer in the City of Oaks who is comfortable with uncertainty, loves people, and is passionate about advocating for my users.
If you asked me about my interests, I would probably say “I like everything”. My time as an undergraduate at Appalachian State University allowed me to do everything. It was here that I gained a “traditional” background of design and making. I learned about philosophy, psychology, communication, religion, history, biology, english, how to screen print, bind books, draw, paint, throw a "perfect" cylinder, hand write the Roman capitals, print an edition of 50 eiffel towers from a block of wood, and compose a magazine layout. My curiosity, my interest in the creative process, and my desire to learn more landed me in graduate school.
The time I spent at NC State opened my eyes to what design is and what design can be. Through my exploration, I came to the realization that design is not just about making things pretty. Design is about problem solving. It’s about storytelling, and it’s about behaviors and metaphors. Design is about systems and experiences that help shape our world. Design is about people. As situations and problems grow more complex, my job as a designer is to find ways in which design can better aid in decision-making. What an exciting time to be a part of such an ever-evolving field of thinkers, makers, and doers!
